What kind of boat should I buy?

It is recommended that you buy a boat with an established national or international class association, whether you decide to race or not. Happily, there are dozens of small sailing boats that meet this condition. Class boats in TASC are:

All of these boats are between 13 and 16 feet long. The Megabyte, Laser and Sunfish are single-handed boats, while the others are intended to be sailed with a crew of two. Which you decide upon depends on several criteria: Do you intend to sail single-handed or with a friend or family member? How much room do you have to store a boat? (A Sunfish occupies a bit less room than a JY15 or Snipe does.) Are you a beginning sailor? If so, avoid a high-performance boat like a Megabyte or Laser II. Do you want to sail with younger children? If so, a Catalina/Capri 14.2 is a good choice because of its deep cockpit and high freeboard. Is LOW maintenance important? Then look for a JY15, Catalina/Capri 14, Sunfish, or Laser. While we do not have any in our club yet, a Vanguard 15 would also make an excellent choice, and is sold by Rooke Sails here in town.
