TASC Dinghies (small sailboats)

TASC members sail a wide variety of boats - mostly between 12' and 18'. The table below shows the currently active types as well as some that would be appropriate - you can click on the links for more information. Currently our most popular classes are the JY15 an the Capri 14.2.

There are some considerations that should be taken into account when selecting a boat:

    1. Some of our lakes are not very deep, making boats below 16' in length a better choice and centerboards more forgiving than daggerboards.
    2. Because we rig-up each time we launch, time to rig the boat becomes an issue - we find simpler is better.
    3. Wind conditions in Memphis tend to be light, so lighter boats with larger sails perform better.
    4. Most dinghies are designed for optimal performance with sailors weighing under 185 lbs. If you weigh significantly more, you may want to gravitate towards the: Capri 14.2, Megabyte, Thistle, Hunter 170 or Buccaneer.

Where can I buy a boat?
Rooke Sails, 1744 Prescott (take the Lamar exit off I-240) http://www.rookesails.com/ is an authorized dealer for Lasers, Sunfish, JY, Vanguard 15 and other small sailboats (new or used).

Other than through Rooke, you may find a used dinghy for sale in Memphis, but that is somewhat rare. The surest way is to decide which kind of boat you want, then go online and find them for sale on the boat’s class website. Come to one of our race-days and talk with some TASC members - they all have experience in this area - and while you're there, try some of the boats in the club. Check the links above for websites with tons of information, including message boards listing lots of boats for sale. You may need to do a little traveling, but you can probably find just about any boat for sale within a day’s drive of Memphis.
