"I'd love to sail, but I'm just too busy to get involved with a sailing club"
Does this statement sound familiar? That is why Tornado Alley Sailing Club was started - our mission is to:
- keep sailing fun
- keep sailing simple
- keep sailing affordable
- limit the time-commitment required
TASC is based on the following principles:
- TASC places emphasis on people and sailing, not on facilities, expensive equipment or heavy
responsibilities. We are a club for people who love
sailing and learning about sailboats. Just bring your boat (generally under 16' in length due to draft limitations) and join in the fun. Many of our members had little or no sailing experience before purchasing their boats but learned quickly with the patient help of other TASC members.
- Racing sailboats is not an end to itself at TASC, but a way to enjoy the company of other sailors and learn from each other. We take fellowship, sportsmanship an the Corinthian spirit of sailing seriously and do not tolerate "win at all cost" attitudes. Opportunities are available to learn all that is needed to participate.
- TASC members trailer their dinghies to where the sailing is good. Sailing lakes in the Memphis area are seasonable in nature. Some venues are drained for flood control in winter, some dry up at other times of the year. Sailing on only one lake would limit our sailing season.
- Almost any sailboat can participate competitively, because we use the "Portsmouth" handicapping formula.
- We keep membership very affordable, so
that you don't have to think twice about joining.
- TASC tries to sail the entire year, as weather permits. Our formal racing/meeting schedule is in spring and in autumn, when the wind is best. Other events ( New Year's day sail, the "TNT" - Thursday Night Thing, etc.) are scheduled informally through our "Forum" and e-mail communications.
